What it is

What “Asian massage” actually means.

The phrase means massage techniques from Asia. It is a family, not one treatment, and the members are quite different from each other.

Thai massage comes from Thailand. You stay clothed on a mat. There is no oil. The therapist uses palms, thumbs, knees and feet, and moves you through assisted stretches. It feels like yoga that someone else does for you.

Balinese massage comes from Bali in Indonesia. It is done on a table with warm oil, using long strokes, palm pressure, skin rolling and gentle stretches. Medium to firm, with a steady rhythm.

Hilot comes from the Philippines. The therapist feels for tight spots first, then works them with warm coconut oil, kneading and rocking. Medium pressure.

What they share is a hands-on, whole-body approach with a lot of pressure-point and stretch work. What they do not share is the feel: Thai is active and dry, Balinese and Hilot are oil-based and slower.

Honest list

What we do not offer, and what to book instead.

Some Asian techniques need specialist training that we do not have on the team. We would rather say so than send someone who learned it from a video.

Chinese Tui Na. Medical Tui Na belongs at a licensed Chinese medicine clinic. We offer an acupressure-style Chinese massage instead: firm point work, massage only.

Japanese Shiatsu. Not offered. For clothed pressure-point work, Thai massage is the closest.

Korean massage and body scrubs. Not offered. Scrubs need a wet room and a beauty licence.

Anything medical. None of these traditions, as we offer them, treats injury or illness. For pain that is sharp, new or getting worse, see a doctor first.
